Know Vastu Shastra

Vastu Shastra (Vastu- physical environment and Shastra- knowledge/ text/ principles. The 't' in both the words is dental. Also spelled Vastu) is one of the traditional Hindu canons of town planning and architecture. These canons are codified in texts such as Manasara Silpa Shastra (by Manasara), Mayamatam (by Maya), Viswakarma Vaastushastra (by Viswakarma), Samarangana Sutradara (by Raja Bhoja), Aparajita Praccha (by Viswakarma's son Aparajita) and Silparatna. Other treatises such as Agni Purana and works by Kautilya and Sukracharya are not popular even though they preceded the previously mentioned documents. Distinction of style exists due to each documents place of origin. Mayamata and Mansara Silpa Shastra are considered Dravidian because they are from south India whereas Viswaskarama Vastu Shastra is considered Aryan due to its north Indian origin.

Vastu Shastra deals with various aspects of designing and building living environments that are in harmony with the physical and metaphysical forces/ energies of the cosmos such as the gravitational, electromagnetic and supernatural. Building practices based on limited interpretations of these principles are still sustained in specific areas of India.

Though Vastu is conceptually similar to Feng Shui in that it also tries to harmonize the flow of energy (Also called Life-force, and Prana in Sanskrit, similar to Chi in Chinese) through the house, it differs in the details, such as the exact directions in which various objects, rooms, materials etc are to be placed.

Vastu questions answered here

Hello Friend,

It’s been long now. But I have lots to share. Today, we are going to see some of the most common queries we have about Vastu.

The most commonly question people have asked me is “Is Vastu Sastra the science of architecture?”

My views with the knowledge imparted by Devi Saraswati, my teachers and what I have experienced is Vastu Sastra is the science of architecture but also is all about the science of Cosmology, Astronomy, Metaphysics, Geography and Geology.

Let me elaborate. When we look at it with respect to the Cosmological aspect, in the immense universe, apart from the Earth we live in, there are many Solar Systems apart from our solar system affecting the lives on Earth. It is also observed in texts of the Ayadi Shadvarga about the construction of the holy places like Temples and Residences.

The great Brihat Samhita of Varamihira also talks in the text about Vastu Sastra. It says : “ I will now explain for the happiness of the astronomers and astrologers the science of architecture that has come down from Brahma through a steady line of intellectuals.”

To understand the metaphysical aspect, best can be made very clear if we can understand Vastu Purusha Mandala. The Mandala symbolizes the metaphysical principle of the all-encompassing celestial principles.

Geographical and Geological facets of Vastu Sastra are involved in the study of topography of the land and its surrounding before purchasing the land apart from the external universe including rivers, sea, mountains, continents, stars, planets. It also involves the interrogation of soil which involves sound, touch, smell, taste and color highlight the geological aspects of this great science.

The other most commonly asked question is “Can you provide some guidelines to find a suitable site for building my house?

From all possible texts I have read, they tell us that the natural flow of the land should be to the East, North and/or North-east. The Samarangana Sutradhara clearly tells us that the land slanting towards the direction presided over by Varuna (West), Yama (South), Marut (North-west), Agni (South-east) and that which is depressed in the brahmasthana (middle) is extremely bad and unfit for living. There are certain sufferings identified due to the downslide. The below table demonstrate the same.

Downslide

Suffering from

South-east

Fear of fire

South

Fear from ill-health, insanity and death

South-west

Ailments resulting in chronic disorders

West

Loss of peace, wealth and prosperity

North-west

Foreign residence, family quarrels and ailments.

Poverty and disintegration is generally observed due to depression or hollowness in the middle.

Health and wealth is attracted with elevation in the middle and declivity towards the east, north and north-east.

happiness and contentment comes with depression in the borders of all the four sides.

Vastu tips for Doors

Hello Friends,

Here is my hearties apologies for not been providing you regular tips on Vastu. But now here I am, back with some really exciting information and tips for Vastu Homes. I am sure it will add value to you.

Let us now understand about the Vastu tips for Doors.

It is always good to have East, North, West and South doors are perpendicular to each other as per the compass needle.

We have readings saying that the west facing and south facing houses are inauspicious, but its not the truth. The truth is that all the four facing plots are good and it as per the favourable direction for every individual. What we have to take care is that the house is built according to the Vastu Shastra.

For us to understand, it is very simple. We have to take care that the doors of those buildings which has a 15 degrees twist, the gate and main door in East is now shifted to North-East and that is not favourable. Same goes with those building with South gate gets shifted to South-West. In such situation it is advisable to have gates and door in the North-East in East side plots, North-East in North side plots, South-East in South side plots and the North-West in West side plots.

It is always preferred to have doors placed at North-East corner for the North facing plot as it is the best suitable place. Similarly, we prefer to have doors placed at North-East corner for the East facing plots, doors placed at South-East corner for the South facing plots and doors placed at North-West corner for the West facing plots. It is always advisable to take some suggestions from experienced Vastu consultant for second and third best solutions.

For any rooms with the entrance from South West, the door should always be placed in the North-East. The reason behind this is, when someone enters, the waves emerging from the doors affect the mind with the magnetic waves always flow around us. So, it is also advisable to have some painting or window opposite to each door for air flow.

As far as the size and shape of the door is concern, Vastu advises that width of the door should be half of the height of the door, its good for the house.

The main entrance door of the house has lots of importance and hence it is always good to have it made from good quality wood. It's width should always be bigger than other doors of the house to distingue it from other doors. It should be decorated with a design and should be painted. It should look grand compared with the other doors. The main door is the index of the quality of the good vibrations of the house.

As per the Vedic concept, Vastu home has to be aligned with the cardinal directions. It is very important to take care that while entering into the house, there should not be any disturbing works of art such as those depicting war and misery as they invite negative energy in the house, affecting every one residing in the house.

A glance how to work with Vastu

Hello Friends!

Today I'm going to talk about how should one work with Vastu homes.
To start with a complete paper work is needed with all layouts and not the satiable changes on it.

For your understanding I have a sample images of a factory layout to understand it better.

Match this layout with the Vastu standardised layouts for division of the area. Image can be seen in Vastu Tips' post.

The suggestions are generally with respect to the nature of work but before it is very important to examine the unit with respect to the construction, arrangements and interior as show in the factory layout here.

Now, the arrangements are re-organised keeping in mind the directions and corners as per the Vastu Purush's arrangements. Using of various Pyramid Instruments to avoid demolition's and Feng Sui products to rectify directions can help a lot.

The suggestions are always customised as per the unit and its use.

For better results, kindly consult a Vastu Consultant to avoid the wrong use of instruments.

Vastu Homes

Shree Vastupurushay Namaha

After the mail responses received, many of them as shown interest in Vastushastra and I want to know its basic knowledge. So in this post I have concentrated on what Vastu is all about.

Vastu Shastra is an environmental science talking all about the flow of energy in the premises that allows the in and out flow of air and sunlight that’s directly related to health, financial gains, mental peace and joy and happiness in the premise no matter it’s a house or office or factory or in that case, any commercial.

The old and ancient architecture during the Vedic times had specified rules and standards set by our sages in those times emphasizing religious faith in Vastu designs and follow it with all trust in it. It was made so obvious for the house owner or in that case the builders and the architect to follow these rules to avoid the adverse happening and flow of negativity or any evil influence on and in the house.
Today, it is considered as building philosophy in which from the shape to the direction of the building is given equal importance while considering the aspects of designing. From selecting the land to its slop and shape of the building is concentrated on which all our ancient constructions in that case not only for our houses but temples, palaces, forts, offices or any commercials It is observed that it often provides relief if not cures to physical or emotional problems simply by relocating an entrance, window or room.
There are some of the important point to cover on aspects discussed here. We will see them in the next post. Have a happy Vastu house.
Thank You.
